Shannen Doherty talks 'stress,' struggles after stage 4 cancer announcement: 'I'll dig deep'

Shannen Doherty expressed gratitude to fans for supporting her after announcing she has stage 4 cancer.

The “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum, 48, revealed Feb. 4 on “Good Morning America” she had been privately living with cancer again during the past year. Her attorney, Devin McRae, confirmed to USA TODAY last week that her breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in March 2015, had metastasized and she suffered from a chronic respiratory illness.

“I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers and support,” Doherty wrote in an Instagram post Tuesday. “It’s an odd time right now and I find my feet not completely underneath me.”

The actress revealed in the “GMA” interview that her decision to go public with her diagnosis came amid a legal battle against State Farm over claims she was forced to pay out of pocket after her house was “severely damaged” in the 2018 Woolsey fire. She said she decided to come forward because legal documents, which mention her cancer, were about to become available to the public.

Doherty and State Farm have since been wrapped up in a public back-and-forth battle, with Doherty’s lawyer slamming the insurance company after a legal document filed by State Farm accused her of using her cancer diagnosis as a legal strategy to “garner sympathy.”

State Farm spokesperson Sevag Sarkissian told USA TODAY at the time the company stands by its previous statement, which said they “empathize with Ms. Doherty’s heath issues and wish her a full recovery. We strongly believe we have upheld our commitment to our customer and have paid what we owe on this claim. We are prepared to defend our position in court.”

Doherty has since received an outpouring of support, like Tori Spelling, who played Donna Martin opposite Doherty’s Brenda Walsh on “90210” and wrote on Instagram last week she was “sending lots of love, support, and animal vibes to make you smile.”

Writing Tuesday, Doherty said: To say I have stress is an understatement. To say that I’m struggling is mild. But… I believe that I will find my footing. I’ll dig deep for the inner strength I need to face it all. I pray I do it all with dignity and grace. I have so much to say. So much to share. I will. For now… please know how much you all help lift me.”
